The Braithwaite Centre is set within 40 acres of land in the stunning Lake District and every John Roan School student has the opportunity to visit during their time here. This term it's the turn of years 8 and 9.
Hope Memorial Trust, which runs the centre, was established by Arthur Hope, a former Headteacher of The John Roan School from the 1920s. He wanted to give our capital’s young people the opportunity to experience the beauty beyond their urban environment.
The centre acts as the perfect base for our students to access a wide variety of pursuits they may otherwise never experience, embrace the beauty of our spectacular countryside and be challenged and inspired by the bountiful nature of outdoor life. Activities that students can enjoy include:
- Rock climbing
- Hill walking
- Orienteering
- Nature rambles
- Canoeing
- Swimming
- Ghyll scrambling
Students who have visited always talk about the lasting impression that their trip will have on them. Trips have been extremely limited over the past 2 years, making this visit even more impactful.

“At The John Roan School we aim to develop character, compassion and service to the community, as well as providing a wide variety of enriching experiences for our students. The Librarians are a remarkable group of young people who genuinely enjoy doing something that benefits others. They have also learnt so much from the planning and organising of all the community events, and the Goldsmiths Community Engagement Awards developed their confidence and public speaking skills. I am extremely proud of them.”
Jennifer Allen, John Roan School Librarian

After over two years in the planning, Ms Hibbert and a talented troop of singers, dancers and budding actors pulled out all the stops to put on a superb production of High School Musical this week.
Over two nights, the show was a riot of uplifting songs, pom poms and remarkable American accents, ably supported by a crew of lighting, sound and backstage managers. A huge congratulations to everyone who was involved in the show, you should all be extremely proud of yourselves. An enormous thank you also goes to Ms Hibbert, Head of Drama, as without her dedication, none of this would have happened.
